Breaking Bad Habits

So many of our downfalls come from simply having bad habits.  If we can break the habits, we would be able to make our resolutions and lifestyle changes that will ultimately make us happier, healthier and more productive.

Whether its a new year, a new season or a new month, try to set ONE realistic goal that you wish to change the most.  Start small.  And know there is no magic – that it will require work.

Here are some tips that may help you break a bad habit, such as eating too much sugar, not eating enough vegetables or whole grains, exercising more, or simply exercising at all, smoking, drinking too much alcohol, whatever it may be for a healthier lifestyle.

Tip #1 – START SMALL
Don’t look at the big picture.  Look at each day as it comes.  If you want to start exercising, don’t aim for 6 days a week for an hour at a time.  Aim for 3 days at 20 minutes each.
If your goal is to lose 50 pounds, know that a pound a week is a realistic approach.
If it’s junk food that you want to cut out of your diet, allow yourself dessert after dinner, and make it a healthier choice than your usual late night binges.

Tip #2 – ONE STEP AT A TIME
Know as with anything, that change takes time.  You aren’t going to lose 10 pounds in 1 week nor pack on solid muscle in 5 weeks.

Tip #3 – DON’T BEAT YOURSELF UP
Know that no one is perfect and that if you slip up, tomorrow is a new day. If you eat 5 cookies instead of the 1 that you planned, don’t blow your whole day because of it.
Enjoy a holiday.  Use the extra food as fuel.  Know that life is about spending time with family and joyous occasions and that one day isn’t going to make or break your diet.
And if you don’t make it to the gym one day, know that it’s not going to change your body by taking a day off.  A rest day is in fact proven to be a great tool for your body.

Tip #4 – SHARING IS CARING
Having family and friends to share your struggles and successes will make your journey to a healthier lifestyle easier and less daunting.  When you know you are not alone in your endeavors, it makes things a bit easier and less scary.

I would love to hear your resolutions and goals for a healthier lifestyle.

Reach for the stars, don’t quit, and know, if you do a little bit each day you are one step closer to your goals.
